1947. Lord Mountbatten had been named the last viceroy of India and sent to New Delhi. Lady Edwina, his wife, was one of the great ladies of the English aristocracy, but at the same time one of the most defiant of social conventions. Their constant and preferred company was the pandit Nehru, who had just emerged from an English prison. Soon he will become the first leader of free India. Edwina and Nehru should have been enemies and yet, between the Indian leader struggling for independence and the English lady defiant of conventions, love blossomed, which Lord Mountbatten gracefully accepted.
